START TO FIN IS H
South and June in northern states. Most
caladiums grow best in lightly shaded areas
protected from direct sun, such as the
shade found under tall trees. The Florida
series of caladiums has slightly thicker
leaves and is more tolerant of an hour
or two of direct sun.
Plant an assortment of streaked,
speckled, and ruffled caladiums in pots or
beds to add attractive color and interest to
your garden for months.
Pot caladium tubers
indoors in early spring or outdoors when
soil temperature warms to 65°F. Sprinkle a
slow-release granular fertilizer in the
planting hole. Plant the tubers horizontally,
roots downward, in 1-2 inches of soil.
When temperatures drop
to about 50°F, dig up the tubers and cut off
the leaves. Allow the tubers to dry for a
week, then store in peat moss at 50-6s°F
for the winter. Plant again in spring.
